Pieksämäki – A Small Town with Big Opportunities

I’m often asked why I’m still in Pieksämäki. Most of my peers left decades ago for job opportunities in larger cities or even abroad. Yet, I — along with many others — have stayed because we see opportunities here that aren’t always obvious at first glance.

For many, Pieksämäki is known as a railway hub, but the town’s vitality depends on much more than train schedules. While an aging population and demographic challenges are real concerns, Pieksämäki’s strengths make it a vibrant and attractive place to live, work, and do business.

Prime Location & Strong Connectivity

First and foremost, Pieksämäki’s location is a major advantage. Its railway connections across Finland are excellent, and the town is easily accessible from Kuopio, Mikkeli, and Jyväskylä. Highways extend in all directions, making transportation convenient for residents, businesses, and tourists alike. This accessibility is a significant competitive edge.

A Diverse Economy & Business Potential

Pieksämäki also has a diverse economic structure and actively invests in new businesses and entrepreneurship. Recent investments in clean energy, such as the Niinimäki and Sarvikangas wind power projects, support sustainable development and enhance the region’s attractiveness. These projects could unlock up to a billion euros in investment potential, building a future focused on clean energy transition.

Given the current global landscape, the defense industry is also expanding, and Pieksämäki-based companies have much to offer in this sector. The local business community is proactive, with initiatives like the Savo Defence network working to seize emerging opportunities.

Quality of Life & Outdoor Recreation

Another key strength of Pieksämäki is its high quality of life and strong connection to nature. The town offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities, sports, and leisure. From the WatershedTrails network to modern sports facilities and a rich cultural scene, there is something for everyone — including the town’s long-standing passion for motorsports. Compared to other towns of similar size, Pieksämäki stands out for its diverse recreational options. After all, where else can you find multiple active summer theater groups and three different motor racing tracks?

A Strong Community & Civic Engagement

Ultimately, a town’s vitality comes from its people. Pieksämäki has a strong local identity, and its residents actively participate in community events and initiatives. While it’s often compared to larger neighboring cities like Kuopio and Jyväskylä, the truth is that Pieksämäki is just as dynamic—if not more so—than many other towns of its size.

Here, everyone has the chance to make a difference. Civic engagement and participation in local decision-making empower residents to shape the town’s future. I have been involved in municipal politics since 2008, contributing to key decisions that define Pieksämäki’s development. The town’s future isn’t shaped solely by officials or council meetings—it’s influenced by all of us through our actions and initiatives.

The Road Ahead: Challenges & Opportunities

Pieksämäki’s challenges are real, but so are its opportunities. A city that dares to invest in its strengths and look toward the future will remain vibrant and competitive. Pieksämäki has all the ingredients for success—it just takes courage and collective determination to make it happen.
